“You look like an old man,” my wife told me. “Your hair. Your clothes. You are 22 years old, not 52.” She was right. I did look older than 22. However, that was the point.
“You don’t understand,” I said. “I am trying to sell ads to men in their 40s, 50s and 60s. I already have one strike against me due to my age.”
Even at a young age, I recognized that first impressions were important. So, when I began my sales career, I knew I had to “look the part.” I would wear at least a shirt and tie each day to work, and many days wore a sport coat or suit.
