I am reluctantly writing this post because I fell off the diet/exercise wagon — again. Sure, I had good “excuses:” the holidays, shin splints, illness, building a house. But at the end of the day, it was my “want to” that gave out.
I keep looking for a “quick and easy” way to make this happen, and I lose heart after a few days or weeks. I am not proud of it, but I am not the only one who struggles with this either.
Now the fruits of my weight have hit me in the face again. During a consult with a doctor, I tipped the scales at a whopping 320 pounds. Granted, it was in dress shoes, but it is still the heaviest I have ever been.
As a result, I have sleep apnea, diverticulitis and asthma. While my weight may not be directly responsible for these conditions, it certainly is a factor.
Around the beginning of the year, some of my closest friends began using the MyFitnessPal app on their iPhones. Simply put, the app helps people set a daily calorie goal to help them reach an overall weight/fitness goal.
I have seen such apps, plans, programs before. I have even tried one or two — always falling off the wagon sooner or later.
MyFitnessPal, however, has a social networking component that allows you to add friends from Facebook, etc. — if they use the app as well.
Each day, when you close out your calorie count, it posts it to a wall you friends can see. Their daily results post to your wall.
Friends can send messages to one another through the app for encouragement — and more importantly — accountability.
I am on day three of this new journey with a goal of losing two pounds per week. My hope is to be less than 250 pounds by the end of the Summer. Then I hope to keep it going to a much healthier weight and overall lifestyle.
Aside from the calorie counter, I love the fact this app has a vast database of foods, both grocery and restaurant. All you have to do is enter the desired food into the search field and it brings back result. Better yet, the app has bar code scanner that will enter the calories automatically.
I eat out for lunch many days, but the app helped me find food at restaurants that kept me on track for my daily calorie goal. I even ate at Carl’s Jr. yesterday. (Char-grilled BBQ Chicken Sandwich with a side salad and lo cal Balsamic Vinaigrette).
Armed with this tool, and help from my friends, I am optimistic about my chances of reaching my goals.
It reminds me of the time I asked a doctor what he thought was the best diet.
“Most of the time, it is the one people stick to.”
